[size=13.3333px]AAVSO Alert Notice 566

[size=13.3333px]January 31, 2017

[size=13.3333px]Beta Pic observations requested for BRITE-Constellation

[size=13.3333px]The BRIght Target Explorer-Constellation (BRITE-Constellation)
[size=13.3333px]satellite is obtaining high-precision photometry of selected very
[size=13.3333px]bright (mv < 4) stars. Its purpose is to investigate the "stellar
[size=13.3333px]structure and evolution of the brightest stars in the sky and their
[size=13.3333px]interaction with the local environment." The AAVSO is part of the
[size=13.3333px]BRITE-Constellation Ground Based Observations Team (GBOT),
[size=13.3333px]supporting cutting-edge science from the BRITE-Constellation
[size=13.3333px]satellites and coordinating with BRITE-Constellation scientist
[size=13.3333px]Dr. Konstanze Zwintz (Universitaet Innsbruck) and her team.

[size=13.3333px]The delta Scuti star beta Pic (NSV 16683) (3.80-3.86V) is one of
[size=13.3333px]the BRITE stars being focused on during this season. Bet Pic is
[size=13.3333px]particularly interesting now because a transit of the star's
[size=13.3333px]planet's Hill sphere (the region around a planet in which it
[size=13.3333px]dominates the attraction of satellites) is predicted to occur
[size=13.3333px]during 2017-2018. Ongoing observations beginning now are valuable
[size=13.3333px]to establish a baseline prior to the transit.

[size=13.3333px]The AAVSO’s webpage on the BRITE target stars
[size=13.3333px]([size=13.3333px]https://www.aavso.org/aavso-brite-targets[size=13.3333px]) was updated in November
[size=13.3333px]with information on bet Pic from Dr. Zwintz. AAVSO observers with
[size=13.3333px]appropriate equipment and located at a southern enough latitude are
[size=13.3333px]encouraged to observe bet Pic. Its brightness makes bet Pic well
[size=13.3333px]suited to PEP and DSLR photometry; CCD photometry is also possible.
[size=13.3333px]However, great care must be taken by all observers, especially those
[size=13.3333px]using CCD, to avoid saturation. As the amplitude of this star is
[size=13.3333px]very small, visual observations are very difficult, but they are
[size=13.3333px]welcome.

[size=13.3333px]Multicolor (BVR) photometry better than 0.01 magnitude and
[size=13.3333px]time-series observations with a cadence of a few minutes (less than
[size=13.3333px]10 minutes) are requested beginning now and continuing at least
[size=13.3333px]through 2017 and likely through 2018. The precision and cadence
[size=13.3333px]required are essential in order for the data to be most useful for
[size=13.3333px]studying the transit.

[size=13.3333px]Spectroscopists wishing to participate should submit their spectra
[size=13.3333px]directly to Dr. Konstanze Zwintz ([email protected]).

[size=13.3333px]Another campaign on bet Pic that is underway is being coordinated
[size=13.3333px]by Dr. Iva Laginja (Leiden Observatory, The Netherlands), and AAVSO
[size=13.3333px]observations are invited. For details, please see
[size=13.3333px]http://home.strw.leidenuniv.nl/~laginja/documents/beta%20Pic%20photometry_ENG.pdf

[size=13.3333px]Coordinates for bet Pic: 05 47 17.09 -51 03 59.4  (2000.0)

[size=13.3333px]Charts: Charts with a comparison star sequence for bet Pic may be
[size=13.3333px]created using the AAVSO Variable Star Plotter (VSP) at
[size=13.3333px]https://www.aavso.org/vsp[size=13.3333px].

[size=13.3333px]Please submit observations to the AAVSO International Database
[size=13.3333px]using the name BET PIC.

[size=13.3333px]This campaign is being monitored on the AAVSO Observing Campaigns
[size=13.3333px]webpage at [size=13.3333px]https://www.aavso.org/observing-campaigns[size=13.3333px] and is being
[size=13.3333px]followed on the Campaigns and Observation Reports Forum at
[size=13.3333px]https://www.aavso.org/content/bet-pic-brite-observing-campaign[size=13.3333px].
