Damping of MHD turbulence in a partially ionized plasma and applications
As the most natural and expected fact, astrophysical fluids are magnetized and turbulent. The Kolmogorov law revealed from observations of turbulent interstellar gas and the GS95 (Goldreich and Sridhar 1995) model of turbulence confirmed by numerical simulations are similar in their beauty and simplicity. The latter has been shown to successfully reproduce the properties of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) turbulence. On the other hand, MHD turbulence mostly takes place in partially ionized plasmas, which fill the most volume throughout the Galaxy and build up molecular clouds from which stars form. In this seminar, I will introduce the MHD turbulence theory in a partially ionized medium under the consideration of the damping by neutrals. The output of this study has a wide range of astrophysical applications. I will show you examples of its applications in the difference of line widths of neutrals and ions observed from molecular clouds, and cosmic ray propagation.
