Is S&T dying?

Just pick up the latest S&T, I know they are losing money and they seem to solve the problem by cuttting cost, but to me, this is suicide as I don't enjoy reading it anymore. Am I alone in thinking so?

Dear Bill,

到書店走走，你會見到不少圖書雜誌互相競爭。國內天文科普雜誌也有兩本，還有地理雜誌，考古雜誌，科學新知之類的雜誌等等，全面彩色印刷，售價吸引 (RMB < 20 !) 。還有一種趨向，外國的出版社授權在國內印刷旗下的英文書，只售原版價錢的 1/3 !    例如一本厚達 70 mm 的 Encyclopedia of the Solar System second edition，我去年經 Amazon.com 買共要 US$76，2008 年出國內版只需 RMB188，不過所有彩圖變成黑白，全書也改用薄紙 (厚 38 mm)，三聯書店將它轉到香港賣 HK$225，值吾值你自己決定了。

還有，Internet 的資訊對書出版也有頗大的衝擊。天文應用軟件可以用以前做不到的形式模擬過去和將來的星空，看來傳統的普及天文年曆也在捱打呢 ….

I subscribe to both S&T and Astronomy.  In recent issues, S&T is significantly behind Astronomy in terms of number and quality of articles.
