[size=13.3333px]AAVSO Special Notice #424

[size=13.3333px]October 26, 2016

[size=13.3333px]Observations of V1656 Sco (ASASSN-16kd) needed during dust formation

[size=13.3333px]Further to AAVSO Alert Notice 550
[size=13.3333px]([size=13.3333px]https://www.aavso.org/aavso-alert-notice-550[size=13.3333px]), observations of
[size=13.3333px]the nova V1656 Sco (ASASSN-16kd = Nova Sco 2016 No. 2 = PNV
[size=13.3333px]J17225112-3158349) are requested beginning at once.

[size=13.3333px]Dr. Fred Walter (Stony Brook University (SUNY)) reports that this
[size=13.3333px]nova, discovered in September 2016, appears to have entered the
[size=13.3333px]dust-making phase, according to K- and H-band data obtained with
[size=13.3333px]the Andicam imager on the SMARTS 1.3-m telescope at CTIO (ATel
[size=13.3333px]#9673).

[size=13.3333px]Dr. Walter reports that "On MJD 57686.50 [2016 October 25.0 UT]
[size=13.3333px]the BVRIJHK magnitudes were 17.2, 16.0, 13.6, 13.0, 10.6, 9.5, and
[size=13.3333px]7.9, respectively. There is no evidence for a dust dip at optical
[size=13.3333px]wavelengths. Since 3 October the BVRIJ brightnesses have faded
[size=13.3333px]monotonically by 0.05 ± 0.01 mag/day."

[size=13.3333px]Multicolor photometry (BVRIJHK) is requested at least until V1656
[size=13.3333px]Sco is lost behind the Sun. A cadence of a few to several times
[size=13.3333px]per night is suggested, with a S/N sufficient for good resolution.
[size=13.3333px]Visual observations are also welcome, although the V faintness of
[size=13.3333px]the nova may make these unfeasible.

[size=13.3333px]Coordinates (2000.0):  R.A. 17 22 51.46  Dec. -31 58 37.1

[size=13.3333px]Charts: Charts with a comparison star sequence for V1656 Sco may
[size=13.3333px]be created using the AAVSO Variable Star Plotter (VSP) at
[size=13.3333px]https://www.aavso.org/vsp[size=13.3333px].

[size=13.3333px]Please submit observations to the AAVSO International Database
[size=13.3333px]using the name V1656 SCO.
