[size=13.3333px]AAVSO Alert Notice 559

[size=13.3333px]October 19, 2016

[size=13.3333px]Observations of CI Cam needed to support spectroscopy

[size=13.3333px]Kelly Gourdji and Marcella Wijngaarden (graduate students at the
[size=13.3333px]University of Amsterdam/Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy)
[size=13.3333px]have requested AAVSO observers' assistance in providing optical
[size=13.3333px]photometry of CI Cam in support of their high-resolution
[size=13.3333px]spectroscopy with the Mercator telescope + Hermes spectrograph in
[size=13.3333px]La Palma from now through January 2017.

[size=13.3333px]They write: "...We are currently observing the variable star
[size=13.3333px]CI Cam (the B[e] optical counterpart of a HMXB system) with the
[size=13.3333px]HERMES spectrograph at the Mercator Telescope in La Palma. Having
[size=13.3333px]observed the star for three nights now, the object appears to be
[size=13.3333px]in outburst. In particular, H alpha was measured to be 80 times
[size=13.3333px]the continuum flux, and increasing between Oct. 9 and 12. This is
[size=13.3333px]similar to the previous outburst in 2004/5. Photometric data
[size=13.3333px]obtained during the 2004/5 outburst suggested an outburst duration
[size=13.3333px]of about 3 months and a peak brightness of 11.2 in the V band."
[size=13.3333px]More information is available in ATel #9634 (Wijngaarden et al.;
[size=13.3333px]www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=9634[size=13.3333px]).

[size=13.3333px]Multiple snapshot observations per night in BVRI are requested
[size=13.3333px]beginning immediately and continuing through January 2017. Time
[size=13.3333px]series are not necessary unless requested later via an AAVSO
[size=13.3333px]Special Notice. Observations made using other filters will be
[size=13.3333px]useful as well as long as there are multiple observations in these
[size=13.3333px]bands. Unfiltered observations are also useful but preferably only
[size=13.3333px]when they are available for multiple nights (in order to
[size=13.3333px]cross-match with other observations). CI Cam has a V range of
[size=13.3333px]9.5-11.9.

[size=13.3333px]Coordinates (2000.0): R.A. 04 19 42.14   Dec. +55 59 57.7

[size=13.3333px]Charts with a comparison star sequence for CI Cam may be created
[size=13.3333px]using the AAVSO Variable Star Plotter (VSP, [size=13.3333px]https://www.aavso.org/vsp[size=13.3333px]).

[size=13.3333px]Please submit observations to the AAVSO International Database
[size=13.3333px]using the name CI CAM.

[size=13.3333px]This campaign is being followed on the AAVSO Observing Campaigns
[size=13.3333px]webpage ([size=13.3333px]https://www.aavso.org/observing-campaigns[size=13.3333px]). A thread has
[size=13.3333px]been created on the Campaigns and Observation Reports forum at
[size=13.3333px]([size=13.3333px]https://www.aavso.org/content/ci-cam-observing-campaign[size=13.3333px]).
