AAVSO Alert Notice 550

September 9, 2016

Nova Sco 2016 No. 2 = PNV J17225112-3158349 = ASASSN-16kd

Event: Nova in Scorpius

Discovered by:
- Shigehisa Fujikawa (Kan'onji, Kagawa, Japan; reported to CBAT via
M. Soma (National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Mitaka, Tokyo))
- All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) (K. Z. Stanek
et al., ATel #9469, published September 7; reported to CBAT via L.
Chomiuk (Michigan State University))

Discovery magnitude:
- Fujikawa - 11.6 unfiltered CCD, using a 120-mm-f.l. f/3.5 camera lens
- ASAS-SN - 12.13 V, using ASAS-SN robotic 14-cm telescopes

Discovery date:
- Fujikawa - 2016 September 06.481 UT
- ASAS-SN - 2016 September 06.00 UT

Coordinates (2000.0): R.A. 17 22 51.46  Dec. -31 58 37.1  (from VSX)

Spectra: Spectroscopy indicating that Nova Sco 2016 No. 2 is a
highly reddened classical Fe II-type nova was obtained by A. Arai
(Koyama Astronomical Observatory, Kyoto Sangyo U.) and S. Honda
(Nishi-Harima Astronomical Observatory (NHAO), U. Hyogo) on 2016
Sep. 8.43 UT at NHAO (CBET 4320); by T. Bohlsen (ARAS Group,
Armidale, NSW, Australia) 2016 Sep. 8.41725-8.54828 UT at Armidale
(ATel #9477); by D. Bersier (Liverpool JMU) et al. on Sep. 8 UT at
La Silla (ATel #9478); and by J. Prieto (UDP/MAS) et al. on Sep. 8
UT at Las Campanas (ATel #9479).

Observing recommendations: Observations of all types (visual, CCD,
DSLR, spectroscopy) and all bands as instrumentation permits are
strongly encouraged as the nova evolves.
