Hi,
Here is a subset of the sequence of eruption flare on the east limb of the solar disc on Jan 28, 2012, from ~12:30 to ~16:00.

Telescope: Astrophysics Starfire EDT 155mm f/9, with 4X telecentric lens (f/36)
Filter: Solar Spectrum SO1.5/0.3A, with Baader CERF prefilter
Camera: Imperx 4M15.

note the time stamp given by the filename:

yyyy=2012
mm=01
dd=28
hh=hour
mm=minute
sssss=second and millisecond

Just interested to know how do you know it's a solar flare instead of a straight pillar prominence?

Firstly, I use the term flare liberally with no specific physical meanings.  Secondly, if you inspect the images closely, especially near the limb, you'll see many flare-like changes.  In comparison, the "pillar" did not change that much.

I have more than 300 images for this event, and just select a few for posting here (you do not expect me to put them all here as single frames, do you?)

I am now processing another set of "flare" images (this set should really be called prominences as it is a complicated loop structure) take on the same day (Jan 28) but on the western limb.  There are more than 1600 frames lasting over 4 hours, and changes are by the minute.  I am seriously considering how to make it into a "movie clip", but it seems I don't know how.

Agree... I just wonder how pts could judge simply from those shots.

It is difficult to tell a flare from a single image.  You must follow the active region for some time.
See this post:
http://www.hkastroforum.net/viewtopic.php?t=24113
and this:
http://www.scholarpedia.org/article/Solar_Activity

You can see flare and filament or even prominence are closely related.
Surely from limb images, it is difficult to tell the occurrence of a flare.  However, the changes in the morphology and motion of the plasma, there should definitely be some flare acitivity.
