From some video at Shanghai (e.g. http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTA3MTY0MDky.html), the sky is really dark as night for about 1 min (but totality ~ 5.5 mins).  I saw last years' not that dark, I guess.  Is some totality different from others ?  Why ?

Good question! I also have question too!

Whether totality is different from others? Cloud is one of the reason?

This is my first time to see total solar eclipse. Unfortunately, the weather condition on 22 July 2009 at Shanghai was really bad - cloudy and heavy rain!

Before totality, Shanghai was mostly cloudy, with intemittet sunny but only happend in a very short period of time.

Around 8:50am, started raining... 9:20am, rain sudden came down heavily!! no hope to see totality which exptected to be happend around 9:38am...

nothing to see...I only "felt" the sky was sudden dark for around 5 mins...

Yes, it was really dark as night during the period of totality.

After that, I asked our group leader of Shanghai eclipse observation group, Mr Yue, whether totality was so dark as I never seen total solar eclipse before!

Anyway, wonderful experience.

回復 1# 的帖子

Dear David,
今次全食時,上海地區伸手不見五指,原因是天上還有厚厚的雨雲,
把全食帶以外的浮雲反射入來的光都吸收掉.
全食帶中的光度也受全食帶外有多少反光雲所決定.
