Stanley Kubrick was not the author of "2001 space oddessy". The original auther, Arthur C. Clarke, long predicted that human would consume nearly all Earth's resources in the coming few centuries.

In his another book "End of Childhood" describes desparate human who has consumed nearly all earth's resources, hoping to be salvated by another higher form of intelligence, only to discover that such salvation demands an extremely high price to pay for.

The book author of "2001 Space Oddessy"  is indeed Arthur C Clarke. This is mentioned in the film footnotes also.
