Yes, we travelled the north island only.
With my experience 10 years ago in south island, the weather pattern was quite regular of about 1 clear night out of 4 nights. North island always has more rain than south island in their winter time. So, before departure, I had told to them to get prepared of unfavourable weather with the trip. But this year was extremely horrible than usual. From the local TV news, we had 3 times of sub-tropical storm attacking!
Because I could only have long period holidays in July or August, and our initial destination was Australia. But no special package ticket was available even we had made booking 4 months before. NZ became our next option to down south for travel and astronomy.
Though nothing was done in astronomy, that still is a good time for us to have a good perspective visit to the north island. It is quite different from the south island.
If people would like to travel the north island, I would suggest going in March. Local people told us that is the best weather month in the island, sunshine almost every day.
Lake Tekapo is the best place for astronomy, and I think March should also be the best month for visiting. But so pity I couldn't be there in March unless quitting from my current job.
Orion, I think you should have enjoyed your visit to Lake Tekapo last time. Or you may organize a tour next year for our society members.
