國際科學化光學監測網絡標誌 ISON 掠日後軌道有變,說明它的質量已改變了。 天文學家認為光科網彗星至今尚未解體,有兩個可能的原因:
(1)彗星緩慢自轉。彗星受熱而出現加速自轉,因而產生強大的離心力不能忽視,高速旋轉足以令彗星解體。如果光科網彗星保持15.7小時緩慢自轉週期,引力仍然可以保持彗核的完整性。
(2)彗星有較大的體積。如果光科網彗星比其它瓦解彗星大得多,重力可以把彗核維持在一起。美國太空總署的研究人員估計,彗核的直大約4.8公里。從現時的彗星活動模型計算,彗核應比原先估計更大,最後的分析彗星直徑可能介乎5至7公里之間,但未有確實觀測數據支持。

這顆彗星名為2012 S1 (光科網彗星,ISON彗星),它是一顆非常接近太陽的彗星,明年(2013)年11月28日最接近太陽,屆時距離太陽少於0.012 AU(180萬公里)。它經過太陽粒子加熱然後,可以成為一顆肉眼可見的明亮彗星。現時這顆彗星位於木星軌道以外。
