Banff Enlightened by Environment-Friendly Streetlights
On November 4, 2007, the Town of Banff and OSRAM Opto Semiconductors (a world leader in light-emitting diode LED technology) unveiled eight LED streetlights on Bear Street. The innovative new lighting leads from Banff Town Hall to the entrance of Central Park.
The lights are the first of their kind ever installed in North America. The LED lighting pilot project is part of the Town’s ongoing priority to implement energy alternatives throughout the community.
The custom manufactured LED prototype lamps replace existing 100W metal halide fixtures.
Due to the nature of LEDs, we can expect to see 36 per cent saving in power consumption, and a 93 per cent reduction in maintenance costs. Each LED streetlight will also account for a 324 lb reduction of CO2 into the atmosphere.
"We are really pleased to be working with OSRAM Opto Semiconductors," says environmental coordinator Chad Townsend. "OSRAM has invested significantly to help us explore lighting alternatives for our community."
